Justice lawyer defends attorney firings

A top Justice Department lawyer acknowledged Tuesday that more than a half-dozen U.S. attorneys were fired in the last year, in some cases without cause, but denied Democrats‘ charges that they were dismissed and replaced for political reasons. But McNulty reminded the panel that federal prosecutors serve at the pleasure of the president. And he repeated Attorney General Alberto Gonzales‘ promise to submit the name of every replacement to the Senate for confirmation.

Ukrainian president appeals against law weakening his powers

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who is locked in a power struggle with his prime minister, has appealed to the Constitutional Court against a law weakening his powers, his office said Tuesday. The law was supposed to help clarify the division of power between the president's office and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych's Cabinet. But the pro-Western Yushchenko, who has seen his influence ebb away in recent months, has complained that it gives more authority to the Russian-leaning Yanukovych.

State law leaves sex offender in the streets

It is a state law designed to protect children - sex offenders can’t live within 1,000 feet of a school, park or day care facility. However, in Hartford City, finding a place to live that doesn’t break the law is not easy. Anthony Pollard, 62, a convicted sex offender, sleeps in his car at night because he can’t stay at his home, which is down the street from a school. “I go to truck stops, I go to rest areas, and that is where I sleep,” Pollard said. "I am broke, and there are no other places in Hartford City to live that is not within 1,000 feet. They are throwing me clear out of the town.”
