Tearful scenes as 15-year-old boy charged with killing elderly North Shore widow Doreen Reed appears in court
There were tearful scenes at the North Shore Youth Court as the 15-year-old charged with the murder of Doreen Reed made his first appearance.
Family of the boy, who can not be identified because of his age, stood weeping in the public gallery as he appeared in the dock.
The teen's lawyer made a bail application which the judge denied for fear he would reoffend. The 15-year-old has been remanded in custody at a youth justice facility to reappear next month. As he was led from the courtroom, family yelled "we love you, stay strong".
The body of 77-year-old North Shore pensioner Doreen Reed was found in her Birkdale home on the weekend. Police say she was stabbed several times and some vital organs were pierced. They are not ruling out further arrests.
